GENERAL INFORMATION

An oxygen concentrator is an appliance which uses electrical power to separate oxygen from the air.  Travel oxygen concentrators have been designed to meet the specific needs of travelers. They are compact, relatively lightweight, and are powered by self contained batteries, auto cigarette lighters, or wall outlets (both domestic and international).

Oxygen flow rates vary by manufacturer. Oxygen flows are typically as low as 1 liter per minute and as high as 6 liters per minute. Most units deliver oxygen in an on-demand or what is often described as a pulsing delivery system. This means oxygen is only delivered when the patient takes a breath. One manufacturer has incorporated both the on-demand technology with the traditional continuous flow technology making their product suitable for travel patients who also suffer from sleep apnea. Battery duration is typically the biggest concern for oxygen travelers. Battery durations vary by manufacturer and can range from as little as 50 minutes to as much as 8 hours. See the TRAVEL section for more details.
